November 2018 Meeting – Toys for Tots

Tuesday, November 6th at 7pm
We are back at the Hillcrest Lodge for the November meeting.

John Braun and Jerry Anderson will be demonstrating using templates and jigs to aid woodworkers in making toy trucks and cars. Templates and jigs can also be adapted to other types of toys. There will be an audience-participation portion for toy making. The Marines will be picking up the toys that the Toys for Tots committee has made.

As an added note there will be an approximately 10 minute flag ceremony in honor of Bill Baer by a Marine volunteer.

October 2018 Meeting – Brian Noel

Tuesday, October 2nd at 7pm
Mount Vernon Christian School
820 W Blackburn Rd, Mt Vernon, WA 98273

Making the Cut – A Career in Woodworking

Our October program will feature NCWA member Brian Noel of Oak Harbor. Brian and his wife Kitty started their business Bearkat Wood 18 years ago making small projects for the Myrtle shops on the southern Oregon coast. Brian has continued making custom fine furniture since that time and 8 years ago began making saws and card scrapers. The June issue of Fine Woodworking reviewed one of his saws and titled the article “Premier Dovetail Saw is Worth the Wait”. Come and hear Brian discuss his woodworking processes and what’s involved in making a premium handsaw.

September 2018 Meeting – Diane Frederick

Tuesday, September 4th at 7pm

Our September program will feature accomplished pyrographer Diane Frederick (that’s wood burning for those of us who don’t speak Latin). Diane has been professionally wood burning since the 80’s and works with both wood and gourds. She’ll speak about choosing the right wood and have samples of wood burning on different wood species. She’ll have samples of her work on gourds and talk about how this differs from working with wood. Diane will also discuss the different variety of wood burners available and the pro and cons of each type. Come and find out how this skill might be incorporated into your next woodworking project.

August 2018 Annual Picnic

On Saturday, August 25, Val and Laura Matthews will host the annual picnic and tool auction from 1-4PM. See the August newsletter for directions.

Our traditional combined Northwest Corner Woodworkers Association (NCWA) and Northwest Washington Woodturners (NWWWT) event takes the place of our normal monthly meeting. There is lots of room for parking. Bring tools you want to auction, and bid on something you find that you can’t live without. All you have to do is show up with a side dish (salad, desert or whatever), something cool to drink, and a lawn chair or two. Burgers, hotdogs, brats, fixings, soft drinks, water, paper plates, plastic ware and napkins are provided. Details on the auction process and entry form are in the newsletter.

Expect to eat around 2PM. This year the Woodworkers are cooking!
