The program for our Dec 3rd meeting will feature our first Holiday Potluck Dinner, a Toys-4-Tots Benefit Raffle, our 2×4 Woodworking Challenge and presentation of our annual Spirit Award. A social hour will begin at 6:00 with dinner being served at 7:00. NCWA elves Jim Bucknell, Ed Pysher, and Al Ashley have come up with some great raffle items for the evening and tickets will be sold during the social hour. The club will provide the main dinner courses and drinks. Please bring a side-dish, salad, or dessert. Can’t bring a potluck item? Please come anyway. You can always throw a few dollars into the Toys-4-Tots donation bucket as a contribution to the evening. For this meeting please use the main entrance on the west side of Hillcrest Lodge. See you there!
November 2013 Meeting – Dick Weber
On November 5th, our guest is a retired junior-high social-studies teacher, turned carver. Dick Weber fell in love with carving in 1970 when he saw the world’s tallest totem pole in Alaska. He decided that was what he really wanted to do, so over the years, he took classes from expert carvers and developed his skills. Initially, he concentrated on Northwest Indian style carving, and then learned other carving styles. Currently, he teaches carving classes in Oak Harbor and Anacortes, but he still takes occasional classes himself. Birds and faces are part of his specialties now. Dick plans to demonstrate his skill in carving faces at our meeting, and will also bring several examples of his work for display. He has also offered to donate some of his work for raffle during this meeting! Proceeds will go to our Toys for Tots program.
Fall 2013 Shop Tour
Our fall Shop Tour will be this coming Saturday, October 19th. We’ll be visiting 6 shops in the La Conner area, and we’ll have a light lunch at our last stop. You’ll see good use made of smaller shop areas as well as some larger shops. Please respect the scheduled open times since this will allow participating shop owners to also visit some other shops. When 2 shops are open at the same time, either shop may be visited first. Parking is tight at several shops so please carpool when possible. As always, it’s nice when we wear our membership badges so we can all get to know each other better. Feel free to bring spouses or friends who might be interested in seeing what the NCWA is all about. We’ll have coffee and muffins at our first stop (Jerry Anderson’s) as well as copies of complete shop tour directions.
October 2013 Meeting – Jennifer Dolese
On Oct 1st, we’re back at the Hillcrest Lodge with a live demonstration of marquetry by Tom Dolese’s talented wife, Jennifer. Jennifer has been collaborating with Tom on many of his furniture commissions with beautiful marquetry scenes for several years. She studied with Craig Vandall Stevens, a well known marquetry artist, and has perfected her own style with creative designs that incorporate a wide variety of veneers with subtle hot sand shading. She taught a class for NCWA a few years ago and demonstrated her talents during the last shop tour in the Bellingham area. Jennifer is also a member of Artwood, located in Bellingham’s Fairhaven district. For more info see Tom and Jennifer’s website: http://terrafirmadesignnw.com
