September 2012 Meeting – David Helm

Our September 4th meeting will be back in the Hillcrest Lodge and will feature
club member David Helm. David joined NCWA in 2010 shortly after a crazy
driver plowed into his shop in the Bellingham area. David was in his office next
to his shop at the time, but was unhurt. He is an accomplished woodworker and
has built beautiful furniture and cabinets for his home. He also specializes in West
Coast Native American mask carving. He has studied the art and attended several
workshops by master carvers. David’s program will include examples of his work
and he will show us the process of creating a mask beginning with raw wood from
start to finish.

August 2012 Annual Picnic

On Saturday, August 11, we’ll be gathering at Val and Laura Matthews place at 1PM for the annual picnic and tool auction. This is our traditional combined Northwest Corner Woodworkers Association and Northwest Washington Woodturners event. Val and Laura have ample parking and space for this, and all you have to do is show up with a side dish (salad, dessert or whatever), something cool to drink, and a lawn chair or two. Normally, we eat about 3 PM and close the bidding for the auction at around 4 PM. Don’t forget to bring your significant other and something to sit on. The two clubs provide the burgers, hotdogs, brats, fixings, paper plates, plastic ware and napkins.

Also, the drawing for our Toys-for-Tots raffle will be held, and tickets ($2 each or book of four for $5) will still be available for purchase prior to the drawing.

The annual picnic takes the place of our regular monthly meeting: there will be NO regular meeting on Tuesday, August 7th.

July 2012 Meeting – The Great NCWA Birdhouse Challenge

Attention Woodworkers! (and bird lovers)

The program for our next meeting will include a challenge by our president to all of you to build your best birdhouse and bring it to the July 3rd meeting. There is absolutely no limit to how elaborate or whimsical (corny?) you can construct this one-of-a-kind creation! Let your creative juices flow, and let’s see what you can all do. No prizes to be awarded, just the pride in your own work. Have fun in the process, and share your work at the meeting.

Arlington Hardware & Lumber

Arlington Hardware & Lumber is now a member of our Vendor Support Group. They will give our members a 10% discount on lumber products. They carry an inventory of basic hardwoods but have a well stocked lumber yard. They also asked that we notify our members that the store has two specials every month for all customers. They offer 20% off to all customers on all hardware items on the first Saturday of each month. There are some limited exceptions, so be sure to ask if the “1st Saturday discount” applies to the item you want to buy. Additionally, on the first Wednesday of each month there is a similar 20% discount on hardware items for “seniors” (over 59). (Seniors get the special 20% discount twice a month.) Lumber is not included in these two specials.

Arlington Hardware & Lumber is located at 215 N. Olympic Avenue in Arlington. The phone is 360-435-5523. Email address is Be sure to show your membership card!

In Memoriam: Nick Van

The Northwest Corner Woodworkers Association regrets to announce the passing of Nick Van on Monday morning, May 7, 2012. Nick had been a member of NCWA since 2000. He was elected President in 2001 when, as he put it, “no one else would take the job” and he was instrumental in the evolution of NCWA into the organization it is today. He remained a member of the board for several years and continued thereafter to serve the membership as an instructor and mentor to “newbies”. Nick is survived by Allegra, his wife of 58 years, four children, a host of grandkids, and an emerging crowd of great-grandchildren.
