PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE APRIL 2026

Looking at new growth in the spring  reminds me of the growth our club is experiencing as a result of help from many hands.  New and revised programs are popping up all over the club.

Shop Talks - As a result of efforts by Andrew Pellar and Ann Osborne, we are seeing shop talks blooming all over our geography.  I recently attended one hosted by Tim Buckley discussing his adventure in making a leaded glass breakfront cabinet.  Several members attended and we had an enlightening 2 hour session on building this intricate and delicate but sturdy cabinet. I also have enjoyed attending the monthly shop talk breakfast at Skylark’s Cafe in Bellingham where you can enjoy a good meal and lively conversation every 3rd Tuesday of the month at 9 am.

Shop Tours - I have heard from many members that the Shop Tour Program, which was discontinued due to Covid 19, was sorely missed.  One of those people who has expressed his sentiments has stepped up to test drive the program to see if we can resurrect it.  Dave Hurson has graciously agreed to conduct our first Shop Tour in the Camano Island area.  The idea is to have 5 different shops on tour ending in a lunch with all attendees.  The date will be April 11 and more details will be offered on our website and in future correspondence.

Newsletter - Speaking of future correspondence, Abe Nurkiewicz has agreed to step up and take the role of Newsletter Editor.  I am grateful to Abe for reviving this club benefit that we had come to rely upon.  He will need your help in submitting ideas and articles that our full membership will enjoy.  Look in your inbox for the first edition just after the beginning of April

Skagit Wood Expo- April 18th and 19th is our annual participation in the Wood Expo.  By donating 2 hours of your time, you will receive free entry to this fun-filled event.  There are lots of displays of wood, tools, woodworking accessories, gift items, live entertainment and food carts.  We need your help with set-up on the 17th, skills displays, greeting and break-down.  If you can spare a couple of hours, you will be guaranteed to have a good time and help make our club be a positive presence.

Winterfest - Greg Koenker has graciously agreed to be this year’s Winterfest Coordinator.  With the help of our new Vendor Ambassador, George Knutson, will be looking for donated items including wood, woodworking projects, tools and appliances that can be raffled off in this December gathering.  More to come as this approaches.

Education - Our Education Committee has been instrumental in compiling several compelling classes for our member’s enlightenment and enjoyment.  These include band saw basics, hand tool use, dove tail basics, table saw safety and usage and lots more.  Check the entry page of our website for the calendar of upcoming events and take advantage of this amazing member benefit.

Please plan on joining us for this upcoming membership meeting on April 7.  We will have an expert on hardwoods, slabs and epoxy give a talk on enhancing your creative skills.  Kevin Stormo is the owner of Stormo Hardwoods, one of our preferred vendors, whose company specializes in cutting slabs, various hardwoods and dimensional lumber for fine furniture makers.

I’m looking forward to seeing you at these great events.

Earl Kessler
